Family Business Award – Winners Yet Again.

July 8, 2016

5 Star Timbers has continued its succession of accolades this year by receiving the Gold Coast Business Excellence Award for “Family Business” for a second time.

The Lanyon Families association with the Australian timber industry spans across a whopping 5 generations!

Their adventure began with Samuel Lanyon back in the early 1900’s. Samuel's first job was for the Paper Company of Australia as a trapper, protecting newly sewn pine seedlings from pesky rabbits, later working his way up to the position of foreman.

Following his father into the industry came Harold Lanyon along with his children John (Sam), Reg, David, Joan and 5 Star Timbers very own Colin Lanyon.

Not to be outdone by their ancestors, a 4th generation of Lanyon’s would join the timber game.   Sam’s son John, Reg’s son Barrie and someone you may have heard of ……….. 5 Star Timbers Managing Director Justin Lanyon.

5 Star Timbers Director and Machinist Col celebrated 50 years of working with timber in 2014 and he’s still going strong.

Starting as a Debarker Hand with “Softwood Holdings” in 1964, it wasn’t long before Col had obtained skills in all areas of the business and gained the positions of “Production, Divisional and Joint Manager”.

In 1987 he left “Softwood Holdings” and between 1987 and 2007 he would manage and direct sister companies “Fineline Timbers, Grafton Sawmills and Pinewood Products”.

Justin followed his Great Grandfather, Grandfather and Father (Col) into the timber industry in 1988 joining Pinewood Products in the mill before moving to Fineline Timbers in 1990.

In 2008 came the decision to venture further and 5 Star Timbers was born along with Wayne Culph and his family.

Now, in our 9th year of operation the next generation of Lanyon’s continue the tradition.

Having completed their Certificate III in timber merchandising through TABMA and 5 Star Timbers and partaking in Carpentry apprenticeships, Justin’s sons Jack and Dean enjoy working in the yard and machining with their Grandfather.

Congratulations to all of our team for again receiving recognition for their hard work and continued dedication.

Also, thank you to the Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards and Award Sponsors Regional Development Australia for their acknowledgements.
